Correction factors and fair comparisons
SAE correction normalises the air, not the risk. Compare like with like.
Dense, cool air makes more power; the dyno "corrects" measured power to a standard day (SAE J1349: 25 °C, 99 kPa dry air) so numbers from different days are comparable. The factor is applied to torque and power only. It does not correct knock margin, EGT or cylinder pressure, which were whatever the real day made them.
What makes a comparison unfair
- Different hardware or fuel.
- Different weather (ambient, pressure, humidity).
- Different start temperatures: heat soak changes power and knock margin by more than most table edits.
- A sweep against a steady-state session.
The simulator flags unfair comparisons against the baseline. When in doubt, repeat the baseline in today's conditions.
Now try it.
